Clear answers from noisy data, using AI, at scale.

I lead research and engineering in cybersecurity, AI, and large-scale data analytics projects.

Capabilities

Six areas of work. The markers show which of the three fields each one draws on.

leadership, across all three

Analysis of noisy, incomplete data

Most of my career has been one problem in different clothes: getting a clear answer out of enormous, incomplete, noisy data. Working out what is really on a network, or what an adversary is doing, from indirect traces rather than a clean view.

AI and machine learning

Today I focus on applying AI and advanced analytics to turn complex telemetry and research ideas into scalable, deployable capabilities. It started as machine learning for security problems (scalable and streaming classification), continued as machine learning on network telemetry, and now includes large language models: evaluating them, building retrieval-augmented generation around them, and orchestrating several models and agents on one task.

Large-scale data systems

I design and build the systems underneath the analysis: collection, pipelines, storage and query layers for datasets of hundreds of billions of records and petabyte-scale environments, on distributed and cloud infrastructure.

Research-to-operations transition

I take work from a research question, through a prototype, into an operational environment. That includes the unglamorous parts: testing, deployment, and turning feedback from the people who use it into the next version.

Leadership

Government R&D leadership

I have served as Principal Investigator on multiple DARPA-funded research programs. I write the technical proposals that win the work, plan it, report to sponsors, and work directly with government program managers and the operators who end up using the result. I know how research gets funded, evaluated and transitioned inside the Department of War.

Research and engineering leadership

As Chief Scientist I lead research and engineering teams: setting scientific direction, turning it into a plan people can execute, and connecting the science to the engineering. I also review for the field as a conference program committee member.

Outlier.
Left in on purpose.

My background combines cybersecurity research, machine learning, large-scale data analysis and systems engineering. During my PhD at Georgia Tech I studied how the Domain Name System can be used to characterize network infrastructure. Since then my work has continued across Internet measurement, network security and applied research.

I enjoy connecting the scientific and engineering sides of a problem: determining what to measure, building the systems to analyze it, and making the resulting insight useful.

Voreas is the Greek word for the north wind. Astrolavos, my PhD lab, is Greek for astrolabe.
